Doom Mutual
A Nashville shoegaze band, given a website that behaves like a 1999 desktop.
Doom Mutual are a shoegaze and grunge band from Nashville. The site is not a band template with a photo at the top — it is a full 1990s web artifact: a starfield with orbiting planets, a pixel wordmark, rainbow rules, a scrolling marquee, and a system dialog that informs you doom_mutual.exe has performed an illegal operation.
You arrive on a tuning screen — channel 66, signal locked — and click anywhere to enter. The commitment is the whole idea: a period pastiche only works if nothing anywhere breaks character.
Motion & interaction
Everything moves the way the web of that era moved — a marquee, a glitching wordmark, drifting planets — but the entry is deliberate rather than decorative: the signal has to lock before the door opens.
Development
One self-contained HTML file. No framework, no build step and no dependencies beyond a single web font; the styles and the behaviour are inline, and the whole site ships as a static file.
